Loreto Normanhurst

Our story begins with a search for land. Mother Gonzaga Barry wanted to build a new school and convent in equal distance from Hornsby and Wahroonga. She prayed that God would make this possible. Upon arrival at what is now known as Loreto Normanhurst, the sun burst through the clouds and formed a rainbow. Mother Gonzaga Barry announced, “This is where I will build my school” and named it ‘Rainbow Land’. With infinite possibilities, she saw a land where each girl would form a row of goodly pearls, each beautiful in their own way, well rounded and full of potential, seeking to live a life of truth and courage in her actions.

We look towards our heritage, to the inspiring women who have shaped Loreto Normanhurst today. We see a sister, a teacher, a girl, all who have created the legacy and love that transcends generations and only grows with time. These women, who have formed our open circles, create a space without barriers where ideas are exchanged, support is given, and we learn to lead with empathy and conviction. Within this circle, we find inspiration from the past, strength from the present, and hope in the limitless possibilities of our shared future.

Generations of Loreto women have walked these grounds, each leaving a mark on the fabric of our community. From the first students who stepped onto ‘Rainbow Land’ to those who fill our classrooms today, there is a continuous thread of connection. This thread weaves through time, binding us together through shared experiences, values, and dreams. Each generation learns from the one before, drawing strength from their stories and wisdom from their journeys.

In all times, in all places, the Normanhurst girl makes space for each new girl to join our open circle. She brings her individuality, strengths, and limitless potential to a community fostering companionship. She finds inspiration from the past and the community that has shaped her world today. With this, the journey begins as she opens her mind to the endless possibilities the open circle can provide. In an ever-changing world, she will always know that the open circle will embrace her with open arms. She has hope for the future - to shape the world with the love and knowledge drawn from her Loreto values to live sincerely, truthfully, and to courageously live out her dreams.

As we honour the past and celebrate the present, we also look forward to the future. The legacy of Loreto Normanhurst is not just a history to be remembered but a living, breathing tradition that evolves with each new generation. Mother Gonzaga Barry envisioned a school for girls that offered a holistic education, nurturing individual talents and making learning accessible to everyone. This approach, known as a sensible education for girls, continues to guide us, reminding us that we are part of something greater than ourselves. This connection between generations is the heart of our community, a testament to the enduring power of education, faith, and companionship. A community of endless possibilities. This is our open circle.
